The role is responsible for helping to ensure consistency of brand amongst all entities and departments of Whitman-Walker; works alongside the Chief External Affairs Officer to build awareness and further the outstanding reputation of Whitman-Walker; and helps to create collateral and marketing materials that enhance and represent the programs and services of Whitman-Walker. The Director of Communications also works collaboratively with leadership to develop and implement communications strategies that further the goals of the organization.Whitman-Walker Primary Essential Duties:Performs and behaves by Whitman-Walker's mission, cultural norms, and core values of dignity, respect, affirmation, and humility.Maintains a respectful, non-judgmental, and compassionate manner with patients/clients/staff.Demonstrates excellent customer service by identifying and exceeding customer requirements.Adheres to Whitman-Walker policies and procedures, with special attention given to HIPAA requirements.Maintains data integrity through conscientious use of relevant tools and employing a system of checks and balances.Demonstrates organizational skills necessary to multi-task, meet deadlines, and re-prioritize as needed.Participates in organizational quality and performance improvement activities.Role Specific Primary Essential Duties:Develops annual communications plan for Whitman-Walker Health, Whitman-Walker Health System, Whitman-Walker Foundation, and Whitman-Walker Institute, including communications, messaging themes, and advertising goals and objectives, in conjunction with the Chief External Affairs Officer, the External Affairs staff and members of the Leadership Team.Works with the Chief External Affairs Officer to coordinate outreach and pitches to national and local media about programs, services, and news that furthers the reputation and brand of Whitman-Walker.Oversees print and electronic advertising and communication campaigns and signs off on copy for accuracy and adherence to purpose and mission.Works collaboratively with the External Affairs staff on the graphic design and creative process.Supervises any public relations and communications consultants.Drives development and content production of Whitman-Walker outreach materials and media, including press releases, advisories, newsletters, fact sheets, and advertising and marketing collateral.Partners with departments within Whitman-Walker and External Affairs staff to execute internal and external communications that provide relevant information, key messages, and benefits to Whitman-Walker audiences.Serves as the primary contact for media inquiries, establishing and building relationships with media contacts.Prepares other Whitman-Walker staff for media interviews serves as a spokesperson for media-related events when appropriate and coordinates media training for staff as necessary.Manages content on Whitman-Walker's website and other social media platforms.Works with Whitman-Walker Leadership to produce documents crucial to the mission including annual reports, briefs, white papers, and research reportsWorks with WW departments to manage grant-funded public health campaigns and public health education with adherence to budget, deliverables, and timelines and manages relationships with external partners and funders when necessary.Regularly tracks and evaluates the impact of Whitman-Walker communication initiatives.Responds off-hours to direct rapid response and crisis communications.Regularly tracks breaking news and update management and leadership on benefits or challenges for Whitman-Walker and prepares briefings and response for senior leadership.Other duties as assigned.Budget ResponsibilitiesResponsible for the development and management of the annual departmental budget. And advises other key leaders on budgets for advertising and media related to their goals and objectives.Management ResponsibilitiesN/AWhitman-Walker Knowledge, Skills, and Talents Required:Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Ability to manage time and effort to meet strategic objectives.Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer service, both internal and external.Knowledge of all applicable WWH policies and procedures.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Knowledge of healthcare information systems with the ability to adapt to new electronic medical records and population health platforms.Analytical skills are necessary for the preparation of accurate, concise, and comprehensive reports.Ability to maintain records and information in an accurate, timely, and confidential manner.Ability to adapt to changes in the service delivery model, re-prioritizing as necessary.Flexibility to work various shifts, including afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts as necessary.Flexibility to work within the organization's various locations as necessary.Commitment to health equity.Role Specific- Knowledge, Skills, and Talents Required:Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to meet with and persuasively engage community leaders, journalists, and media spokespersons.Ability to speak effectively in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one situations.Thorough knowledge of HIV/AIDS and other issues impacting the LGBTQ community, including a general knowledge of healthcare in a community health center setting.Ability to synthesize complex information from a variety of sources, including medical, legal, and research professionals, and present it to a lay audience in a compelling manner.Strong strategic, critical thinking, and analysis skills.Strong organizational skills and demonstrated attention to detail.Creativity, flexibility, and comfort working in a fast-paced environment.Experience in media relations, including press releases, interviews, press conferences, and editorial boards; established relationships with local media preferred.Ability to plan, organize, and implement communication strategies, both within and the ability to work flexible hours (including nights and weekends) as needed.Education and Experience RequiredBachelor's Degree in a public relations or communications field, or comparable experience required.A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the field of communications with demonstrated expertise in high-level communications, message development, strategic planning, and media relations.Experience working with an ethnically, culturally, and racially diverse work staff preferred; ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals required.Working Conditions:Working conditions for this position are normal for an office environment.
